Rain, Rain, Rain!

As I watched the rain falling this morning, I was suddenly struck with the overwhelming desire for God’s Spirit of revival to fall upon the Church. Like the earth, it seems that the Christian Church as a whole has been going thru a time of drought. Have you ever noticed when the ground dries it begins to crack and break apart leaving little crevices? Those crevices become hiding places for bugs and spiders that set little traps and ambushes to catch unsuspecting prey. I think that sort of thing happens to us as believers when we dry up spiritually. Old habits, sins and things that were once a part of our lives before Christ take up ambush positions in the crevices of our hearts, and before you know it, we’re stuck. As I watched the rain running off the side of our driveway and meander thru one of those crevices, I noticed it washed out all of the junk, the garbage, the dried up bug skeletons. And in a little while, fresh, wet soil began to fill up the cracks, making the perfect place for grass seed to take root and grow. Oh that the rain of the Holy Spirit would fall upon our lives and wash out all the junk that keeps us from receiving the seed of God’s Word and bearing the fruit of the Holy Spirit. Oh God, please send your rain! Thank you for the rain falling outside right now, but even more than that, we need you to rain down on our hearts and our lives! Wash away the sin that has so easily entangled us and make us hungry for more of You!

Dara's Medals, Christ's Diligence & Alice's Grandpa

As I watched the American swimming team on the Olympics, I was awestruck at how Dara Torres was able to defy the odds and prove that age should never be a factor when it comes to reaching your dreams. I read one article that said her Olympics run dates back to 1984 – she won her first gold medal that year. That was about 17 or 18 years before Michael Phelps was even born! Since then, Dara has won a total of 12 medals, 4 – bronze, 4 – silver, and 4 – gold. She has never given up but has diligently stayed dedicated and determined in her pursuit of excellence in her sport. Just a few days prior to this past week, the folks in the swim world probably looked at Dara as a washed up grandma, ready for AARP. But now, the world is proclaiming her as the ageless wonder!

As I think about Dara’s amazing determination, I’m reminded of a conversation I had with Alice Knighten this past Sunday. Her grandpa passed away after 81 years of life. The amazing thing about his passing however, wasn’t that he lived four score and 1 year. What is so amazing is the dilligence of our Savior to accomplish something He has wanted to do since the day Alice’s grandpa was born. You see, Alice’s grandpa lived his life as an unbeliever. He really wanted nothing to do with salvation and thought that speaking to priests or pastors was nothing but a huge waste of time. Like all of us, he had his own agenda in life. But unbeknownst to him, God had His own agenda. And God never gave up. It’s amazing how our Savior diligently stays dedicated and determined in His pursuit of our hearts. And just a couple of days before Alice’s grandpa died, he accepted Christ’s invitation and was born again. He spent those last couple of days proclaiming to everyone who came around him that he had been saved by God’s amazing grace! And now, all of heaven is heralding him as resident of that celestial city, ageless, timeless, and eternal! Thank you Lord for never giving up on us!

Sweet and Sour

Today was what you might call a sweet and sour day. Lynn and I moved our son Hunter into college. It's hard to believe that he's already grown up. I am so proud of him though, just like I'm also proud of his sister Jessica. God has truly blessed us with great kids. (Thanks Lord) I thought it would be quite easy to drop "H-boy" off... just pull up to the curb and throw his suitcase out the window, right? Well not exactly. It was, as I said, sweet and sour. One side of my heart is happy and rejoicing that Hunter is ready to launch into a whole new world on his own. The other side of my heart is a little heavy at seeing him leave... And as you can imagine, he was ready to cut the strings and get on with it. I, on the other hand, put up a good front but inside I was all messed up... I'm sure he will shine and his life will be filled with great fun, learning and achievement. My prayers are that he will hold fast to his faith and always be the leader God created him to be. I love you son. Go make a difference.
PS - On the way home, I called mom and dad just to tell them thanks. I know now how they felt the day I moved into the dorm at WCU.

Sweet update from Sourwood

What an incredible weekend! To the volunteers who hosted the booth at the Sourwood festival, as well as those who helped prepare cups, literature, and lug cooler after cooler of ice from the mountain to Main Street --- You Guys ROCK! We managed to give away about 600 liters of Mountain Dew from the Mountain View Booth, served in some 3000 or so 8 ounce cups with ice... Now that's a lot of caffeine floating around on the streets of Black Mountain! The folks who stopped by the booth took away huge quantities of information, books, booklets, flyers, cards, and a lot of smiles from those of you who served them. The greatest thing we shared on Saturday and Sunday however, was the love of Christ. And literally thousands of folks experienced that love from this family of faith. Believe it or not, we had visitors in both services Sunday who heard about us from the booth at Sourwood! Let's pray that those who will be visiting our website to sign up for the free Ipod giveaway will respond to the Gospel message.
I have to tell you all that I am so blessed to be a part of such a loving, caring, serving group of people. Thank you for exalting Christ and sharing His love with Western North Carolina!

Sourwood

Hopefully you have heard that this year Mountain View will host a booth at the Sourwood Festival. We will man a space 10X20 and spend Saturday 9am-9pm as well as Sunday 9am-5pm, giving away free Mountain Dew from Mountain View as well as profiling our family of faith and ministries. I believe this can be a tremendous way to attract unchurched folks to come and visit our place. We have several other promotional items - free books, free literature, videos playing, slideshows, a prayer center, and a place to register for a free IPOD Nano. I hope you will not only drop by for a visit, but bring your friends and family members by as well. As a church, our aim is not just to grow numerically, but to reach out to those around us. I believe a family of faith should influence the community and culture. Many times we see churches grow large in number, but their influence doesn't grow. The community isn't being impacted by the church. I believe Christ would instruct us to make a difference in our world... in fact, He did so many times thru His words as well as thru His example. By participating in cultural events like Sourwood, we will hopefully take another step in influencing our neighbors with the grace and love of our Savior. I look forward to seeing you there...

By the way, if you want to help, we will be preparing about 3000+ give aways Thursday around noon at the old sanctuary. We can still use booth workers too. Contact the church if you can help out. Jennifer James is keeping the roster.

PK Atlanta

What an incredible night! This evening a whole bus load of us dropped in on Newbirth Missionary Baptist Church - where Bishop Eddie Long is the pastor - for Promise Keepers 2008. What a great time we had worshipping our Savior. I saw this group of men transformed thru out the evening from a group of observers to a "gang" of passionate participants. I was honored to be among them. The worship band was kicking... and the speakers challenged us with great talks concerning our responsibilities as men, fathers, husbands, and leaders. I can't wait to see how tomorrow develops. Those of you who missed this time really missed a great time of "male-bonding", powerful prayer, and a wonderful opportunity to get to know many new friends. I can't wait to see this "gang" unleashed on "the mountain"!
