The Time Of Your Life

I watched the arrival of the New Year in a new way this year. I happened to be over at friends house and watched the hold thing in HD TV. It was incredible! We watched the ball drop in New York, then we watched a daredevil set a world record for distance jumping on a motorcycle – 322+ feet! It was amazing! I couldn’t believe how quickly that evening went by. As 12:30 came, I wondered, “Where did the time go?” It seems like time is a commodity that’s always in short supply. Do you ever have enough time to do the things you have to do? Sometimes I think it would be great if the New Year came with an additional 3 or 4 hours a day, then I might be able to get done all the things I need to do. Of course I’m sure by the end of the first year, those 3 or 4 hours would be filled and I would be wishing for more time. God arranged the number of hours we have in our day and based upon the sun and the moon. You can read about that in the first book of the Bible, Genesis. God gave us time for our benefit. Time gives our lives some semblance of order. We have 8 hours for sleep, 8 hours for work, and 8 hours for leisure. It’s supposed to help us arrange our lives so we don’t kill ourselves by trying to add 3 or 4 more hours to our day for work.
Have you ever considered that God doesn’t operate on a time schedule? There is no sun or moon in heaven. It’s always light because He is there. So He doesn’t have a pocket watch or a calendar hanging on the wall of heaven. God is in a special realm that is above time. That means with Him, there is no past or future; everything is present tense. I don’t understand how all that happens, but it’s true. God is timeless. That’s why He can see us right now as we will be in heaven. We are perfect in His sight because of the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. And that sacrifice also isn’t some past historical event, but a real, ever present, atoning work.
For us, however, time is an issue with which we have to contend. I think our time would be more enjoyable for all of us if we could take a page out of God’s life and learn to live in the present. Here’s what I mean. A lot of us don’t live life to the fullest today because we’re trying to relive yesterday. Some of us are stuck in the past with all of our mistakes, failures, and regrets; and we won’t move on because we’re afraid we’ll repeat them all. Others of us are trying to relive the victories and high times of the past; and we won’t move on because we’re afraid we won’t ever be able to achieve them again.
Then on the other hand, there are a lot of us who won’t live life to the fullest today because we’re afraid of the future. And we think that if we get on with today, tomorrow will come along faster than we want. Others of us don’t enjoy today because we’re always looking forward to a future time to arrive… a time when we’re married and have children… a time when we have that new car or that big house… a time when we’re retired and can travel. But living in some fantasy land of the future is a waste of the time you have at present.
That’s why we need to enjoy today. Today is all we have. As one person said, “Yesterday is history. Tomorrow is a mystery. Today is a gift. That’s why it’s called the present.” Keep in mind that with God, everything is in the present. And He has many opportunities for us today. He has places He wants us to go and people He wants us to meet. Don’t miss the opportunities He has given you by wasting the time you have now trying to relive the past or waiting on a future time to come. Whatever He is calling you to do, do it today. That’s really all the time we have anyway, right? So, make the most use of the time you have. Oh, and live it to the fullest... sort of like HD TV - High Definition Living... it's amazing! And I'm not talking about the mirrors like the commercial on TV. This is real life! Live it now!
