About Sunday
1. I loved the acoustic set for worship. It reminded me of the intimate times I have spent in worship during my earlier years!!!
2. What a tremendous pleasure to dedicate a whole family of children to Christ!!! The Flints have such a beautiful "gang" of young'uns.
3. What a wonderful blessing to ordain Adam at the 11:00 am service. Many of you may not know this, but Adam's father has advanced stage lymphoma. He is no longer responding to chemo and has had one failed treatment of bone stems. He is undergoing a radical treatment next week, and was overwhelmed to see Adam ordained before he goes to Duke. Please keep him in your prayers.
4. We saw at least 6 people make commitments to Christ today!!! That never gets old. God is doing some amazing things in this place.
5. The church was PACKED at the 11:00 pm service. We need to start planning for more space!!! I told you this year was going to be HUGE!!!
6. Thanks for all of you who faithfully volunteer at MVC. Two visiting families came up to me after church and told me how warmly welcomed they were by the greeters and the rest of the faith family!!! You are making a difference.
7. I'm looking forward to blessing Swannanoa Valley Christian Ministries with the food drive. We are continuing to collect food for two more weeks. Thanks for those of you who have already participated!!! Keep it coming!!!
8. I never cease to be amazed at what God is doing in our midst. I am so tremendously thankful and unspeakably blessed to be your pastor. I love each one of you and I am glad we are on this great journey together!!!! God bless you all.

It's More Than A Holiday
As this weekend approaches and we prepare to celebrate Memorial Day, thoughts of barbecues and picnics begin to surface in our minds. Many of us look forward to the three-day weekend, taking advantage of the extra day off to do some traveling, or simply to catch up on some much needed relaxation.
But more often than not, we forget what Memorial Day really means, and why we celebrate Memorial Day. Of course, those of you who have served in the armed forces or have family members who have done so are well aware of the history and meaning of Memorial Day, some of you painfully so.
The media usually makes a small comment in regards to why we celebrate Memorial Day, and newspapers often publish a small article, but otherwise the general consensus is that Memorial Day is a time for warm-weather fun and happy celebrations.
This blog is not intended to ruin anyone's Memorial Day weekend plans or parties. It is simply to remind those of you who need reminding that Memorial Day was originally not so much a celebration as it was a day of solemnity, a day of respect and remembrance for those who have served their country and have died doing so.
Regardless of whether you support the current war or not, or even the previous wars throughout history, the fact remains that hundreds of thousands of soldiers went to war for the United States of America. They fought hard and they fought well, and they fought for reasons that may or may not have been righteous. But they pledged themselves to the cause because they believed in the United States, so much so that they were willing to die for the cause.

Angels
"Is it correct to assume that angels are the nonthreatening, loving beings that many people believe them to be? That all depends. We find instances in the Bible when angels were sent to deliver specific messages from God. They often began their messages with phrases like "Do not be afraid," or "Do not fear." But we also find instances in which God used angels to execute His judgment, as in the case of Sodom and Gomorrah and elsewhere.
"Generally, God's angels operate undercover. They don't draw attention to themselves, but instead carry out God's assignments. One reason we may not recognize the presence of angels in our lives is because they are doing their jobs properly. Angels are actively involved in the lives of the people of God, and even in the affairs of people in general. They have a specific function and ministry in the lives of Christians. The Bible says in Psalm 34:7, "The angel of the Lord encamps all around those who fear Him, and delivers them" (NKJV). Hebrews 1:14 says of angels, "Are they not all ministering spirits sent forth to minister for those who will inherit salvation?" (NKJV).
"It is even possible that you have personally met an angel. Hebrews 13:2 teaches, "Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by so doing some have unwittingly entertained angels" (NKJV). It is amazing to think that some of us may have communicated with an angel, but were unaware of it. Angels are nearer than we may realize. If an angel of God were to appear before you right now, you would stand in awe, because angels are very beautiful. When we read biblical accounts of people who encountered angels, they were often overwhelmed by the glory and beauty of them. Still, angels remain invisible most of the time, except on very special occasions when God sends them on a unique mission or clothes them in human form.
"Contrary to what some have been led to believe, angels are not deceased human beings who are trying to earn their wings. Also, when someone dies, their friends or loved ones may say that person is now an angel who watches over them. However, this is not true. When people say that someone who has died now helps them or guides them or their presence is felt, it is not true. People who have gone from this life into eternity do not communicate with us. They do not comfort us. They do not guide us. Certainly, they do not turn into angels. Angels are an altogether unique group created by God.
"Also contrary to what some people have attempted to do, it is incorrect to attempt communication with an angel, to try to pray to an angel, or to specifically develop a relationship with an angel. We find in Scripture that the focus is on praying to God, looking to God, and developing a relationship with God. Yes, God does work through angels, but that is not the point. The point is that it is God who is doing it.
"We don't know how many times angels have been working behind the scenes, how many times they have delivered us, have helped us out of tight situations, or have intervened on our behalf. Angels are all around us, taking care of us and ministering to us, even when we are not aware of their presence. This certainly gives hope in these troubled, dangerous times in which we are living. When we think of all of the violence and chaos and danger in the world today, it is comforting to know that God's angels are watching out for us. They may not help you find a parking space or make your casseroles more flavorful, but you can be certain that angels are God's secret agents, powerfully and effectively doing the work He has called them to do."

About Sunday
1. As I mentioned, the food drive for the Swannanoa Valley Christian Ministry is running behind schedule. Please remember to bring in non-perishable food for this important outreach effort.
2. Isn't it good to know that good behavior is not what is required to have a pure heart? If it were left up to us, we could never be able to measure up to the standard required by Christ.
3. God's grace is truly amazing. What an incredible comfort to know that even though He knows everything about us - past, present and future - yet He still loves us with an everlasting love.
4. Yes, I did say that God has seen all of our "fallen shorts". Just checking to see if you all were awake. A lot of you were not at the top of your game!!!
5. We seriously need help in the nursery and children's ministry. I was serious folks. If everyone would do their part, there wouldn't be an excessive workload on anyone. Please be a part.
6. I am so excited at what God is doing in our faith family!!! It is very apparent that He is still at work in and thru MVC!!!
7. So often we come to church to get a "warm fuzzy" feeling about ourselves and leave our wish list at the altar instead of humbling ourselves before God and examining our hearts.
8. Be sure not to miss your LifeGroup study this week. It's going to be intense!!! But it will also be liberating and lead to true freedom.
I truly love being your pastor. Serving at MVC is the most exciting time of my life. Don't miss next week. It's going to be awesome!!!
