Stop Worrying and Relax

Isaiah 66:1-2 This is what the LORD says: "Heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool. Where is the house you will build for me? Where will my resting place be? 2 Has not my hand made all these things, and so they came into being?" declares the Lord. "This is the one I esteem: he who is humble and contrite in spirit, and trembles at my word."

In our house we have an oversized recliner chair that has a built-in foot rest operated by a pushing back on the chair's back. It’s my captain chair. It’s so comfortable that oftentimes I will plop in the chair, kick up the foot-rest, and within minutes, fall asleep.

The scripture says God’s captain chair, His throne, is in heaven… and his footstool is right here on earth! This planet is God’s footstool. That means everything – the mountains, the rivers, oceans, your home, under His feet…but, more than that, your problems, your worries, your fears – they are all under His feet as well!

So stop worrying and relax – give those problems over to God, kick up your feet, and rest in Him, realizing that every issue you’re dealing with is also truly under His feet, and that He never slumbers or sleeps!

His Birth and Our New Birth

"Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel, which is translated, 'God with us'" -- Matthew 1:23

His Birth in History

". . . that Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God." (Luke 1:35). Jesus Christ was born into this world, not from it. He did not emerge out of history; He came into history from the outside.

Jesus Christ is not the best human being the human race can boast of -- He is a Being for whom the human race can take no credit at all. He is not man becoming God, but God Incarnate -- God coming into human flesh from outside it.

His life is the highest and the holiest entering through the most humble of doors. Our Lord's birth was an advent -- the appearance of God in human form.

His Birth in Me

"My little children, for whom I labor in birth again until Christ is formed in you . . ." (Galatians 4:19). Just as our Lord came into human history from outside it, He must also come into me from outside.

Have I allowed my personal human life to become a "Bethlehem" for the Son of God? I cannot enter the realm of the kingdom of God unless I am born again from above by a birth totally unlike physical birth.

"You must be born again" (John 3:7). This is not a command, but a fact based on the authority of God. The evidence of the new birth is that I yield myself so completely to God that "Christ is formed" in me.

And once "Christ is formed" in me, His nature immediately begins to work through me. This is what is made so profoundly possible for you and for me through the redemption of man by Jesus Christ.

Shopping Frenzy

Yesterday I was driving from Black Mountain to Asheville. I was amazed at how much traffic was on the interstate. People were lined up on the freeway trying to exit at the Asheville Mall, the River Ridge Mall, Walmart, as well as the Biltmore Square Mall. It was an absolute zoo! As I thought about the shopping frenzy that was taking place, I was reminded of how materialistic our world has become.

Rick Warren, pastor of Saddleback wrote the following words of wisdom about materialism at Christmas:

It's tough to be content in America at anytime, but it's particularly hard during the Christmas season. At no other time of the year do people in our churches more often lose their battle with materialism. Marketers spend most of the holiday season trying to convince us that we must have their products, and we must give them to our friends and family.

There's nothing wrong with the desire to acquire. God gave it to us. But any desire that's out of control is a sin. The Bible calls an uncontrolled desire to acquire coveting. Today, we call it materialism - the uncontrolled desire to acquire. It creates all kinds of problems in our lives when it goes unchecked.

So how do you beat materialism this Christmas?

1. Be grateful for what you have.

The first thing we need to do to defeat materialism is open our eyes and see how much we've already been blessed with. All we have is a gift from God.

Many of us struggle with this. We figure we worked hard for what we have. But we must see that God gave us the energy, brains, and ability to work for our house and nest egg. None of us would even be alive if it weren't for God. So we need to treat life - and everything else God gives us - as a gift.

Solomon reminds us of this in Ecclesiastes 5:19. He says, "If God gives a man wealth and property he should be grateful and enjoy what he has. It is a gift from God."

The reason we're often not content with what we have is because we get ourselves into the "when-and-then" thinking trap. We think, "When I get ___________, then I'll be happy."

A lot of people are silently thinking these kind of thoughts. But when-and-then thinking just doesn't work. It will always lead you nowhere. Discontent will always drive you to wanting more. Happiness isn't getting everything you want; it's enjoying what you already have.

2. Be generous with what you have.

God doesn't bless us for our own benefit. He does so because he wants us to share it - to give it away. The Bible tells us in 1 Timothy 6:17-18 (NLT), "Teach those who are rich in this world not to be proud and not to trust in their money, which is so unreliable. Their trust should be in God, who richly gives us all we need for our enjoyment. Tell them to use their money to do good. They should be rich in good works and

generous to those in need, always being ready to share with others."

If you live in the United States, by the world's standard, you are rich. Most of the world is worried about where they're going to get their next meal. Most of us are not worried about that.

God says we should use what we have to help further the kingdom and his work in the world.Every time we give generously, we win a spiritual victory over materialism.

The whole world says get all you can and keep it for yourself. Every time we give something away, we break the grip of selfishness in our lives.

A person's giving tells you a lot about his or her spiritual maturity. It shows the direction of a person's heart. It shows what a person's really like inside. And before we can be content with what we have, we must learn to give generously.

3. Have a godly perspective on what you have.

What does it mean to have a godly perspective on possessions? Paul tells us in 2 Corinthians 4:18 (NLT): "So we don't look at the troubles we can see now; rather, we fix our gaze on things that cannot be seen. For the things we see now will soon be gone, but the things we cannot see will last forever."

If you want to help your people deal with materialism during the holiday season, remind them that there are two realities in life - the material world (what we can see) and the immaterial world (what we can't see).

God says nothing you see will last. Your cars, stereos, furniture - everything - will eventually rust, decay, deteriorate, fall apart, wear out, and return to dust.God wants us to focus this Christmas on what does last - such as our relationship with him and other people. That's what really matters.

James Dobson says it like this: "I concluded that the accumulation of wealth even if I could achieve it is an insufficient reason for living. When I reach the end of my days a moment or two from now, I must look backwards on something more meaningful than simply the pursuit of houses and lands and machines and stocks and bonds. Nor is fame of any lasting benefit. I will have considered my earthy existence to have been wasted unless I can recall a loving family, a consistent investment in the lives of other people, and an earnest attempt to serve the God who made me." There's a guy who's got his priorities right.

Materialism has a grip on many of us. But true and lasting contentment will only come when we have a relationship with Christ. Psalm 17:15 (TLB) says, "As for me my contentment is not in wealth but in seeing God and knowing all is well between us."

Many people today are so weighed down by stuff they can't take a single step toward Jesus. This Christmas, let's look at life thru these 3 points and strive to overcome materialism. If we will, a huge barrier to becoming a follower of Christ will be eliminated from our lives.

Sunday

Well, it’s snowing outside and we’re not sure how long it will last or how much we will get. I love the snow, but I love worshipping with God’s people at MVC much more. I think sometimes we take those special times for granted. Sunday is much more than just another meeting. It’s about a life-changing experience for those who may not know Jesus. It’s a time of finding hope for the discouraged. It’s a time of encouragement for the children of God. Have you ever thought about this: any given Sunday someone will be at MVC for the first time. And God has divinely arranged for that person to be in attendance. People will be there that could very easily be one hour, one minute, one heartbeat away from an eternity without Jesus. God wants to do things at MVC that would absolutely blow us all away if He were to dump it on us all at once. Who knows? The next great evangelist or world-changing pastor may be sitting in our auditorium on Sunday. And that person may not even know Jesus yet. God wants to use us to reach people like that and unite together to make a significant, eternal impact in our world. And I’m not just talking about what goes on inside the four walls of our building. Each of us have been called, equipped and empowered by the Holy Spirit to reach out to those who haven’t darkened the doors of MVC or any other church yet. Will you invite them? Will you encourage them? Will you pray for them and share the story of God’s love in your life? Maybe you, yourself are discouraged. Maybe you’re going thru times that are so tough that you can’t see the light at the end of the tunnel. Well, the light is there and it is Jesus. He knows where you are! He knows what you are going through! He has NOT forgotten you!!! When is the last time you begged Him to do something miraculous and undeniable in your life? I believe that God has placed unlimited potential within the hearts of those who are children of God. The enemy wants to destroy that potential and steal away the hope of Christ. Don’t let him succeed. The Bible says that as a believer, you have authority over him in the name of Jesus. Rebuke him and he has to leave you alone. You have important work to do. People need hope! People want to change! People want to live! And God has given you a special place in this world to tell them that all they ever need can be found in Christ! Tell them! Sunday’s coming... This could be the last message they hear. Sunday is not just another meeting. It’s not just another appointment. It’s not something to drag you down…it’s a gift given to us thru the birth, life, death and resurrection of the Son of God. GO FOR IT!!!

Jesus Knows and Understands

Have you ever had one of those seasons in your life when it seems like everything is going wrong? I’ve been going thru a time like that lately. Not only did we have a tree fall on our camper, but this week my car went on the blink and now I’m without wheels. I realize that those things may seem a bit trivial, but they are rather aggravating. Some of you may be experiencing trials of a much more severe nature. Maybe you feel as though your world is falling apart and no one seems to care. I don’t know what you may be facing, but Jesus knows and He cares. It’s always comforting to hear a friend that has experienced what you’re facing to tell you that they know what you’re going thru and they’ll be there with you no matter what. Jesus is that kind of friend. The Bible tells us, “The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. John 1:14 About 2000 years ago, instead of simply saying, “I’m sorry that you’re going thru a tough time”, God sent His Son, Jesus to live among us. And Jesus has faced everything you and I will ever go thru in life. So we can find hope in Him. He knows. He knows how you’re feeling. He knows your sorrow. He knows your pain. He knows your joy. He knows your fears. He knows when you’re happy. And He knows when you’re sad. He knows when a tree falls on your camper and when your car breaks down. Jesus knows. So whatever you may be facing at this moment, you are not alone. Jesus is there and He knows and He understands.

About Sunday

A few observations about yet another wonderful Sunday at MVC.
1. The weather wasn't as bad as a lot of folks thought it would be Sunday morning. Good to see the crowd that turned out for the services.
2. Great time of worship, as always. It's true that the Spirit of God inhabits the praises of His people. I'm really looking forward to the Christmas service next Sunday. Have you invited anyone?
3. We had several people come to know Jesus yesterday!!! I always get pumped up whenever I see folks respond to the Holy Spirit.
4. Several others of you told me that you were "set free" from the sermon yesterday. You chose to leave the past behind and live in today while reaching for tomorrow.
5. It is so true that we forget the things we should remember and remember the things we should forget. I know that's true in my life.
6. Hope you're not waiting around until the last minute - like me - to get your shopping done. I don't know why I continue to torture myself year after year.
7. Please be in prayer this week as we begin interviews for a full-time youth pastor. Phil has done a great job serving but will be unable to assume full-time duties. He has been involved in the process of selecting his replacement and is excited about the possibilities.
8. As we enter into the last few days before Christ's birthday, remember that Christmas is for-giving, for-going and for-getting.
I love you all and look forward to worshipping and ministering with you for a long time to come!!! Thanks to all of you that give, serve, pray and share the love of Christ each and every week!!! God is good!!!

New Christmas Poem

TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS,

HE LIVED ALL ALONE,

IN A ONE BEDROOM HOUSE MADE OF

PLASTER AND STONE.

I HAD COME DOWN THE CHIMNEY

WITH PRESENTS TO GIVE,

AND TO SEE JUST WHO

IN THIS HOME DID LIVE.

I LOOKED ALL ABOUT,

A STRANGE SIGHT I DID SEE,

NO TINSEL, NO PRESENTS,

NOT EVEN A TREE.

NO STOCKING BY MANTLE,

JUST BOOTS FILLED WITH SAND,

ON THE WALL HUNG PICTURES

OF FAR DISTANT LANDS.

WITH MEDALS AND BADGES,

AWARDS OF ALL KINDS,

A SOBER THOUGHT

CAME THROUGH MY MIND.

FOR THIS HOUSE WAS DIFFERENT,

IT WAS DARK AND DREARY,

I FOUND THE HOME OF A SOLDIER,

ONCE I COULD SEE CLEARLY.

THE SOLDIER LAY SLEEPING,

SILENT, ALONE,

CURLED UP ON THE FLOOR

IN THIS ONE BEDROOM HOME.

THE FACE WAS SO GENTLE,

THE ROOM IN SUCH DISORDER,

NOT HOW I PICTURED

A UNITED STATES SOLDIER.

WAS THIS THE HERO

OF WHOM I'D JUST READ?

CURLED UP ON A PONCHO,

THE FLOOR FOR A BED?

I REALIZED THE FAMILIES

THAT I SAW THIS NIGHT,

OWED THEIR LIVES TO THESE SOLDIERS

WHO WERE WILLING TO FIGHT.

SOON ROUND THE WORLD,

THE CHILDREN WOULD PLAY,

AND GROWNUPS WOULD CELEBRATE

A BRIGHT CHRISTMAS DAY.

THEY ALL ENJOYED FREEDOM

EACH MONTH OF THE YEAR,

BECAUSE OF THE SOLDIERS,

LIKE THE ONE LYING HERE.

I COULDN'T HELP WONDER

HOW MANY LAY ALONE,

ON A COLD CHRISTMAS EVE

IN A LAND FAR FROM HOME.

THE VERY THOUGHT

BROUGHT A TEAR TO MY EYE,

I DROPPED TO MY KNEES

AND STARTED TO CRY.

THE SOLDIER AWAKENED

AND I HEARD A ROUGH VOICE,

'SANTA DON'T CRY,

THIS LIFE IS MY CHOICE;

I FIGHT FOR FREEDOM,

I DON'T ASK FOR MORE,

MY LIFE IS FOR GOD,

MY! COUNTRY, MY CORPS.'

THE SOLDIER ROLLED OVER

AND DRIFTED TO SLEEP,

I COULDN'T CONTROL IT,

I CONTINUED TO WEEP.

I KEPT WATCH FOR HOURS,

SO SILENT AND STILL

AND WE BOTH SHIVERED

FROM THE COLD NIGHT'S CHILL.

I DIDN'T WANT TO LEAVE

ON THAT COLD, DARK, NIGHT,

THIS GUARDIAN OF HONOR

SO WILLING TO FIGHT.

THEN THE SOLDIER ROLLED OVER,

WITH A VOICE SOFT AND PURE,

WHISPERED, 'CARRY ON SANTA,

IT'S CHRISTMAS DAY, ALL IS SECURE.'

ONE LOOK AT MY WATCH,

AND I KNEW HE WAS RIGHT.

'MERRY CHRISTMAS MY FRIEND,!

AND TO ALL A GOOD NIGHT.'

This poem was written by a Marine.

On a Personal Note

As Christmas approaches and the dawn of a new year is on the horizon, I thought I would take time to tell you that I am so truly blessed and honored to serve as your pastor. The love that you have shown my family over these past nine – yes nine – years has been incredible. We have seen the Lord do some amazing things at MVC. From the jungles of Nicaragua to the coalmines of West Virginia, He has blessed thousands of people thru this family of faith. And the good news is: He’s just getting started. I believe with all of my heart that this next year will be better than ever, stronger than ever, bigger than ever, more fun than ever, and more blessed than any of the previous nine years. My continuing prayer for our faith family is that we will continue to grow – both numerically as well as spiritually. I truly believe God wants to blow our minds with what He plans to do thru us in Western North Carolina. The dream is still alive and getting stronger everyday. Let’s join together and tell Jesus that we’re standing under the windows of heaven, ready to receive the blessings He wants to pour out upon us. I want to thank the staff, the deacons, and the spiritual leadership team for their hard work and dedication. Folks, God has blessed us all with wisdom, spiritual leadership, divine guidance and direction thru these people. If I could have any team in the world with which to work, I would choose each one of them all over again. Hope you all have a joyous, Christ-filled Christmas.

In Love,

Kevin

About Sunday

Yesterday was a wonderful time of worship and meeting with friends! I never cease to be amazed at how God is working in and thru this faith family.
1. Great to be in the baptistry again! I never get tired of baptizing new believers!!!
2. It is always good to see the house packed. Keep inviting your friends and neighbors to worship!
3. The Christmas songs at the beginning as well as those worked into the worship time are a nice touch to the season.
4. A lot of folks are hurting this time of year. Keep your eyes open to the families that may be struggling.
5. Have you borrowed anything that you haven't returned yet? You had to be there!!!
6. How many aisles have you ducked down? Again, you had to be there?
7. Although it happened on Saturday, I was so proud of all of you that participated and marched in the Black Mountain Christmas parade!!! The music was fantastic! Great job Carson and Ashley!
8. I am so pumped at the prospects of the coming year! God is going to do something wonderful folks! Let's get ready to move with Him!!! From the movie, "Flirting with Forty" - "You have to swim out of your comfort zone to catch the wave that may change your life!" God is sending us wave after wave after wave after wave!!! Greater things are yet to come!!!

My Commitment

I realize that I have been rather slack lately keeping the blog posted, however things have proven to be a little busy. I took some time off to go hunting in Illinois with a friend. A tree fell on our camper down at Lake James. Thanksgiving always proves to be a busy time. And on and on as you're all well aware. I wanted to post something today for the staff and leadership of our church. God has truly blessed us with a wonderful team to guide us as we pursue His plan and purpose. I know that there are some folks that believe we should get everyone's opinion about everything and set up a congregational style of leadership, but that's not the way our constitution is written, neither is it - in my opinion - Biblical. Whenever you have 500 people trying to chart the direction of the church, you probably will have 600 different opinions. That being said, I do not discount your creative ideas and encouragement. And I believe at times God speaks in various ways to lead us to His desires. But I also believe, based on the Bible, that He uses the pastor and leadership to provide guidance to reach His goal for the church.
So, with that said, I would like to state my commitment to the staff, deacons, and spiritual leadership team of the Mountain View Faith Family. These commitments are not original to me. They have been said in many ways by many other people. But I believe they accurately communicate how I feel about each of you.

1. To support you with vision, love, coaching, resources, and encouragement.

2. To do everything I can to help you be successful and achieve your ministry goals and vision.

3. To value you with affirmation of words, blessings, and finances.

4. To honor and respect you, your gift, and your calling.

5. To hold you accountable to the vision, commitments, and strategies of Mountain View.

6. To help you grow and develop to reach full potential.

7. To be your pastor, boss (to the staff), and your friend.

  • You are my inner circle of trusted partners in ministry.
  • I highly value our relationship.
  • However, if I ever esteem our friendship above my leadership then I won’t say what needs to be said and we limit our progress as a team.

8. To always be truthful and transparent with you.

9. To think the best, believe the best, and speak the best about you. I will publicly defend and support you regardless of any disagreements we have in private. And I expect the same from you.

10. And should the time come, I will release you in love and favor if God ever leads you from this church.

I hope you all have a very Merry Christmas!
In Christ,
Kevin
